World Schools' Athletics Championships

Last week the "Super Six" selected to compete in the World Schools’ Athletics Championships" (Hannah, Eleanor, Beth, Kendrea, Abena and Uchenna) travelled to Nancy, France to take part in the competition.

Twenty-three countries took part in this event. The girls were both excited and nervous to be performing on a worldwide stage. Beth and Eleanor were the first of our athletes to take to the track. Beth ran a PB in the 800m in a time of 2.24.64 and Eleanor ran 2.31.62, a time just outside her PB. Abena and Uchenna followed next in the 200m. Both girls had a great run, especially Abena. She ran in a time of 25.28 which was not only a national standard time for the UK but it placed her first in the schools’ team event and 3rd in schools’ and selected teams combined. She was delighted to receive her medal from the French pole-vault champion Renauld Lavillinie. Hannah had a clean hurdles race and won her heat in a time of 16.99. Kendrea ran 12.49 for the 100m. On the field, Eleanor finished in third position in the javelin with a huge throw of 36.81cms.

Uchenna cleared 1.57 in the high jump just clipping 1.60 with her foot and Kendrea jumped 5m12 in the long jump. The girls ran a creditable time in the "Swedish" relay (2.23.08). The team scored 674 points to finish in seventh position. The overall winners were Australia.

The team also performed a dance at the "cultural" evening which was extremely well received and they all took part in the "nations friendship relay". The whole event was live streamed on the ISF Facebook page and it was watched by many of the girls back at SHSG. The girls summed up their week in France saying:

"It was phenomenal being able to compete against other foreign athletes".

"It was an amazing week of competition and cultural experiences and a week that I’ll never forget "

"It was the best experience of my life and I was honoured to represent my country and my school".
