EAL support

English as an Additional Language

SHSG is a vibrant and diverse community, where students from all cultures can excel.  We have over 100 students who speak English as an Additional Language, with over 30 different first languages being spoken.  Each year, our EAL students achieve excellent results, both at GCSE and A Level.

Teachers are aware of how to support all EAL students in lessons. We also have an EAL English support tutor who works with students one-to-one when needed, or in small groups, to ensure that they are able to achieve their very best.

In a recent focus group with EAL students, all students said that they were having a positive learning experience at SHSG and felt supported.  ‘Teachers understand my situation and give me support when I need it.’

Our EAL Ambassador programme for new Year 7 students has proved very successful.  Older students act as a mentor, to help the transition into the school, offering guidance and tips and friendship.
