Parent Governor Vacancies

We will shortly have vacancies for two parent governors on our governing body and invite all parents to nominate themselves, or someone else with parental responsibility for a child at the school, to stand for election.

The governing body is responsible for both the conduct of the school and for promoting high standards. It carries out its role by setting the vision for the school and ensuring it works efficiently and effectively towards achieving its vision, by building a thorough knowledge of SHSG and its community, by both supporting and constructively challenging the management, and by ensuring accountability and compliance.

Before you decide to nominate yourself, or someone else, you may want to know a bit more about what is involved. Governors need not be experts in the field of education. What they do need is an interest in the school and in the welfare of our children and the time and willingness to get involved. Any skills you have can be utilised by the governing body but skills in the governance of health & safety, HR or finance are particularly useful. All governors are expected to be able to read straightforward budget reports and data on school standards.

Our governing body expects governors to:

  • fulfil the appointment for a four-year term
  • attend two termly meetings of the full governing body
  • sit on a sub-committee and attend the meetings which are usually twice a term
  • visit the school formally for monitoring purposes
  • visit the school informally and support school events such as the 11+ test day and fundraisers
  • commit to attend training courses essential to the wellbeing, safeguarding and success of the school and its students.

In return, our governing body commits to provide you with a structured induction, an experienced governor as a mentor and training in areas such as safeguarding.

In the event we receive more than two applications, the election will be resolved by way of a parent ballot. The process is outlined on the application form.

If you would like to find out more, please email Director of Finance and Business, Mrs Clarke, at with your contact details which will be passed to the chair to arrange a time for a conversation. If you are ready to nominate, please complete the application form attached and return it to the school before 4pm on 31st January 2020. The form can be returned to the school reception, emailed to Mrs Clarke or posted to the school, marked for the attention of Mrs A. Clarke. The application form contains information about disclosure and eligibility to apply.

A copy of this letter and the nomination form will be emailed to all parents for whom we hold a current email address. For those remaining, the documents will be sent to you in the post.
