About Us

So enter that daily thou mayest become more learned and thoughtful, so depart that thou mayest become more useful to thy country and to mankind.

It is a great privilege to be the Headteacher of this outstanding school and to welcome you to our website. For over 100 years SHSG has been supporting young women to develop independence, open minds, curiosity and a keen sense of responsibility.  In the sixth form we are pleased to welcome boys and new girls and are delighted that they quickly become part of our school community.

The quality of teaching is at the heart of an outstanding school.  At SHSG teaching staff and support staff work closely together to ensure that students have the best opportunities possible.  The curriculum is innovative and challenging and is delivered by expert teachers.  We have high expectations and our students achieve excellence in external examinations.

Southend High School for Girls is an academic school plus!  We offer an enviable range of extra curricular activities both in and outside school; music, drama, sports, enterprise, debating, trips, World Challenge and engineering to name but a few.  The range and quality of our academic achievement and extra curricular activities are a testament to the enthusiasm and dedication of both students and staff.

We know that academic achievement and other successes are based on students' well being - their happiness.  SHSG provides a supportive environment in which students can flourish and reach their potential.  We are proud to be known as a caring school, promoting self confidence and valuing each and every member of our school community.  SHSG students leave well qualified, well skilled, well equipped and confident to face the exciting futures ahead of them.

Please delve further into these pages to gain an insight into the school and the excellent education offered at SHSG.  However, it is difficult to convey the unique character of SHSG in words and pictures.  We invite you to see for yourself what we have to offer at an open evening, visits morning or by appointment.
