On behalf of the staff, students and governors, it is a great privilege as Headteacher of Southend High School for Girls to welcome you to our website.
"Excellence in Everything"
Tradition and innovation
SHSG is a vibrant and dynamic school. Teaching some of the most able young people in the country is a privilege and a responsibility. For over 100 years, SHSG has provided a first-class education and built a strong reputation for excellence. The school is steeped in traditions (such as celebrating the school’s birthday!), but we also pride ourselves on being innovative, original and creative. We encourage our students to step out of their comfort zones, take risks and learn from failure.
Academic excellence and life-changing experiences
We are passionate about developing confident, successful and happy young people – the next generation of leaders.
As an outstanding and successful Grammar school, we celebrate and promote academic excellence, but we also place a high value on creativity, performance, sporting excellence and leadership. Our students are active ambassadors for the school in the local community. They also enjoy participating in life-changing leadership experiences such as World Challenge expeditions to Nicaragua & Costa Rica (2016), Mozambique & Swaziland (2018) and will have the opportunity visit Vietnam and Laos (2020). Students also participated in Operation Wallesea Mexico (2019).
Challenge and support
As a parent myself, I fully understand the importance of ensuring that every young person is safe, happy and successful, and subsequently lead SHSG through the eyes of a parent. The Leadership Team, governors and I are committed to ensuring that your child is taught by expert teachers who are passionate about their subject. We are also committed to ensuring that they are guided and cared for by a superb team of support staff.
A family ethos
A central part of our family ethos is the value we place in strong partnerships between the school and home. We encourage parents to participate fully in their children’s journey from Year 7 to Year 13. Together, we can achieve the school’s motto ‘excellence in everything’ for your child.
Our students go on to pursue careers in a range of exciting fields such as volcanology, design, creative writing, television and media as well as in more traditional professions such as medicine, law, education and finance.
I hope that you find our website informative. However, it is no substitute for a visit on one of our Open Evenings or attending one of our Open Week tours. Please take the opportunity to experience our fantastic school and talk to students and staff.
