New Appointment

Dear Parents, Carers, Students and Friends of SHSG

As you know, I am retiring at the end of the summer term.  It will be a sad time for me to be leaving the SHSG family after over 30 years.  However, I leave the school in a very strong position, not only academically but also in spirit. SHSG is a school with strength, with a spirit of inclusion and cooperation.  It is a tolerant community of students, family and staff who care for each other and support young people to be the best they can. With such fantastic students and a truly dedicated staff, the school is poised to go on from strength to strength.  The Governors have appointed Mr Carey, to lead the school from September. I wish him well and he could not be joining a better school.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support of the school and myself over the years.  It has been a real privilege to work in and lead this wonderful community; the end of the summer term will be a huge wrench for me but I am confident that with Mr Carey it will be in good hands.

Ms F J Brierley

Message from the Governors

Mr Carey has been appointed as the new Headteacher of Southend High School for Girls from September 2019. He will succeed Ms Brierley who retires at the end of this school year after over 30 years of outstanding service to the School.  Mr Carey is an experienced headteacher who has overseen the transformation of The James Hornsby School in recent years, and he is now looking forward to taking on the headship of one of the county’s leading selective schools. Mr Carey enjoyed the unanimous approval of governors who considered him an outstanding candidate for the post.

Chair of Governors, Alan Bacon said:

“We are delighted to appoint someone of Mr Carey’s calibre and character to the headship of the school. He shares our commitment to the school’s unique ethos and our confidence in the school’s capacity to go from strength to strength. We are looking forward to working with Mr Carey as he leads the school on the next stage of its development.”
