House Cup Champions 2026 – Hermes House Triumphs Again
Congratulations to Hermes House, who have been crowned Southend High School for Girls House Cup Winners 2026 for the fourth consecutive year.
Final House Cup standings:
- Hermes – 54,815 points
- Athene – 53,904 points
- Hera – 48,753 points
- Aphrodite – 48,570 points
- Aurora – 44,801 points
- Artemis – 42,541 points
Students in Hermes House will be invited to attend the annual Adventure Island reward trip on 14 July. The school also thanks the Sixth Form House Captains for their commitment and leadership throughout the year.
Sports Day
Students are currently preparing for Sports Day on 15 July, one of the most anticipated events in the school calendar, which celebrates sporting excellence and house spirit across Southend High School for Girls.
Year 7 Explore Norman England at Mountfitchet Castle
Year 7 students enjoyed an educational visit to Mountfitchet Castle this week, where they explored a reconstructed Norman castle and experienced what life was like in 1066.
Highlights included:
- Exploring medieval buildings and defensive structures
- Visiting the armoury and blacksmith’s workshop
- Meeting the resident animals
- Bringing history to life through immersive learning experiences
Students were praised by staff for their excellent behaviour, enthusiasm and positive attitude throughout the trip.
International Women in Engineering Day at SHSG
To mark International Women in Engineering Day, Southend High School for Girls will welcome female engineers from a variety of industries on 19 June.
Students in Years 7 to 9 will:
- Take part in engineering problem-solving challenges
- Learn about careers in engineering
- Meet professionals working in fields including cyber security and construction
- Ask questions about pathways into STEM careers
The initiative aims to inspire more young women to consider careers in engineering and related industries.
Year 12 Work Experience Week
Good luck to all Year 12 students taking part in Work Experience Week from 15–19 June.
Year 10 A Level Taster Day
On 16 June, Year 10 students will participate in an A Level Taster Day, giving them the opportunity to experience lessons taught at A Level standard and explore Sixth Form life.
The day will help students:
- Experience a range of A Level subjects
- Use Sixth Form study and social facilities
- Support informed subject choices for post-16 education
Students have already received their personalised timetables.
School Safety Update
As part of ongoing safeguarding and safety procedures, Southend High School for Girls will be speaking to students about lockdown protocols during assemblies over the coming weeks.
Student Sporting Success
Congratulations to Daisy W in Year 8, who has achieved significant success in netball this season.
Achievements include:
- Being named the umpires’ Most Valuable Player in the South of England
- Selection for the South of England Team of the Season
A fantastic accomplishment and recognition of her talent and dedication.
PE Fixtures and Athletics Events
Students will be representing Southend High School for Girls in a number of athletics events during the week beginning 15 June, including borough championships, sprint heats, field events and track finals.
Southend East Station Access Changes
Students and families using Southend East Station should be aware that accessibility improvement works will result in temporary changes from 15 June.
Key information:
- The Riviera Drive entrance will be closed until further notice
- Students should use the Ambleside Drive entrance
- Additional journey time may be required during busy travel periods
Families are encouraged to plan journeys accordingly.
Mental Health and Wellbeing Support
Southend High School for Girls continues to prioritise student wellbeing through a range of resources and support services.
Students can access:

- Wellbeing articles and videos
- Dedicated wellbeing Padlets for Lower School, Middle School and Sixth Form students
